Design Philosophy

Designing a racecar on a yearly basis is a challenging and rewarding task.  With each new car, we hope to build on previous strengths and improve our overall result at competition.

Our designs are based on the timeless words of Colin Chapman: “Simplify, then add lightness.”  We believe that the quickest car will be the car with the best design, not the most technology.

Overview:

  • Powered by Suzuki LT-R450
  • Tuned to run on E85, full sequential ignition/injection
  • Simple and reliable drivetrain w/sequential 5 speed
  • 4130 Chrome-moly TIG-welded frame
  • Stiff, sturdy rod-activated suspension
  • Minimal, easy to troubleshoot electronics
  • Attractive packaging
  • Easy to access and repair all parts

Fabrication

At Northwestern Formula Racing, we take pride in our objective to fabricate as much of the car as possible.  In our headquarters at the Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center, we have a plethora of machines at our disposal including:

  • Two Tree CNC Mills
  • Okuma CNC Lathe with 12 bay tool changer
  • 7 Manual Mills
  • 6 Manual Lathes
  • Welding, Coping, and Bending equipment

Our overall goal for fabrication is to add a hands-on element to our engineering education while building quality parts safely and quickly.
