About us

Explore NFR

We are Northwestern Formula Racing, a student-led team of Northwestern undergraduates and graduates who design, build, and race a fully electric, formula-style car each year in the international Formula SAE Electric competition.

Our Team

Northwestern Formula Racing (NFR) is a team composed of over 60 students from across all six Northwestern undergraduate colleges and schools. Since our inception in 2008, we’ve applied our world-class education to engineer the fastest, most efficient, and innovative car each competitive season. Combating the constraints of limited time, tight budgets, and rigorous performance standards for each car, our members gain an interdisciplinary skillset that takes them beyond the classroom to become leaders in real world industries.

What is FSAE?

Formula SAE (FSAE) is an intercollegiate engineering design competition organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), where student teams design, build, and race formula-style cars.

FSAE began in the USA in 1978, and now incorporates hundreds of international teams that compete in eight competitions around the world. The FSAE series, with projects managed to completion by students, is regarded as one of the most rigorous collegiate design competitions in the world.

Our Work

We are eight subteams united as one – NFR’s success is rooted in our team’s distinctly collaborative nature. The design and construction of our car is an aggressive practicum, meaning freshmen and sophomores are frequently challenged with senior-level coursework under the mentorship of their subteam upperclassmen. Finished projects of each subteam are then integrated together under methodical testing to bring our race car to life.
